AT&T Launches Wireless Data Technology in LA AT&T Customers Will Pay a Flat Rate for All-You-Can-Use Wireless Access to Data LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15 -- AT&T (NYSE: T) today announced the launch of its wireless data network in the Los Angeles market -- delivering real-time, virtual data connections for business. AT&T Wireless IP Service, using Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) will provide instant, wireless access to the Internet, as well as connections to e-mail, stock quotes, corporate databases and other mission critical network services. AT&T Wireless IP service is changing the way business people access information -- from AT&T's PocketNet(R) Service on Internet capable phones to handhelds and laptops equipped with wireless modems. Using packet-data technology instead of a circuit-switched system, AT&T also is able to provide Los Angeles wireless users with flat rate, all-you-can-use pricing. Other benefits of packet data technology include increased reliability and security, and a virtual connection that does not rely on dial-up technology. "With wireless access using your Internet phone, laptop or Palm, AT&T customers now have new freedom to conduct business throughout Los Angeles," said Glenn Lurie, vice president and general manager, AT&T Wireless Services, Southern California. "By using AT&T's wireless network, customers will be able to gain access to the data they need by paying just a flat rate. That's how people want to use the Internet today." CDPD currently is available in 70 percent of all metropolitan areas in the United States. The availability of this technology in Los Angeles adds coverage for an additional 11 million people, bringing the total number of people covered by the CDPD network to 146 million nationwide. AT&T Wireless IP Service will be
used by industries as diverse as emergency services
providers, utility companies, service fleets and package
delivery companies. Local customers currently on board to
start up AT&T Wireless IP Service include Mission
Linen, the Monrovia Police Department and Rely
Transportation, among others. |
