ArsDigita Foundation Encourages Top Teen-Age Website Developers

$10,000 Prize to Commercial-Free, Collaborative Site

CAMBRIDGE, MA - February 28, 2000 -- The next generation of website developers are finding inspiration, encouragements well as some financing from the folks at the ArsDigita Foundation http://www.arsdigita.org, which sponsors an annual competition for teenage programmers. The only hitch is the sites have to be useful to a community of people, have no advertisements, and must distribute their source code on their sites so that other programmers can build on their work.

The winner receives a $10,000 cash award, use of a web server with a professionally maintained relational database management system, and an all-expenses-paid trip to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"I consider it as my most important achievement, for which I will be always proud," says Yiannis Volos of Cyprus, a 1999 Prize finalist who flew to Cambridge, Massachusetts, last June along with seven other programmers for a weekend of networking and training.

The ArsDigita Foundation was created by Philip Greenspun, who teaches at MIT and runs ArsDigita Corporation, a successful open-source enterprise software company.

Applications for this year's ArsDigita Prize are being accepted now through May 15, 2000; the award will be presented in June 2000. Applicants must be no more than 18 years old as of March 1, 2000, and the web service entry must be non-commercial, contain no banner ads or subscription fees; it must be comprehensible to someone who understands only English; it must be tasteful (the sponsors provide some pretty basic, non-restrictive guidelines here); and it must be used by others.
