| U S WEST Teams With Intel To Offer DSL Modems and Fast,
Economical Networking Solutions To Homes and Offices - Intel(R) AnyPoint Home Network and PRO/DSL 2100 Modem Products Combine With U S WEST MegaBit Services to Provide a Fast, Efficient Way to Share A Single Internet Connection - DENVER, March 1 -- Families and small businesses that use their existing telephone line for high-speed, always-on Internet access can now also economically network multiple PCs within their home or business. U S WEST (NYSE: USW) is teaming with Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC) to give customers innovative, powerful home networking options using Intel's AnyPoint Home Network products. The result is that two or more people can share a single high-speed DSL Internet connection as well as share computer files and network printers. U S WEST is also offering new MegaBit Services ADSL customers the Intel(R) PRO/DSL 2100 internal modems, including its streamlined, wizard-driven installation process in addition to the Cisco 675 external modem. The Intel AnyPoint Home Network uses existing phone lines to connect home PCs without the need for additional wiring. The phone line can be used for either voice or data connections at the same time it's being used to network multiple computers or other Internet access devices within the home. The simple-to-install network attaches to either the parallel or USB port of home computers. The AnyPoint Home Network has powerful software that is designed for ease of use, making it quick and easy to start enjoying the benefits of a home PC network. It also is fast, providing up to one megabit-per-second (Mbps) of network bandwidth within the home, which is powerful enough for most of today's home PC applications. "In keeping with U S WEST's vision of simplifying Web use for consumers, the Intel AnyPoint Home Network makes computer use and Internet access more convenient and cost effective," said Teresa Taylor, vice president of Integrated Solutions for U S WEST !NTERPRISE Networking. "There is no longer a need for multiple printers, waiting for a turn on the Internet, or carrying disks from computer to computer to share files or backup information. It's perfect for MegaBit customers who can share their increased bandwidth, or want to have high-speed access from more than one computer or Internet appliance." |
The number of multiple PC homes is expected to reach 26 million in the next four years according to Dataquest studies, and parallel growth in the demand for ways to connect those computers can be expected. "Intel's AnyPoint Home Network products let multiple PC homes maximize their resources and investment by allowing all the networked computers in the home to simultaneously share resources such as a single Internet account," said Dan Sweeney, general manager of Intel's Home Networking Operation. "Adding a high-speed DSL connection, such as U S WEST's MegaBit Services with the Intel PRO/DSL 2100 Modem allows customers to maximize their PC experience with a super-fast connection that can be shared across multiple home PCs." Each PC to be networked needs a USB, Parallel Port or PCI Card AnyPoint adapter. Each model includes everything needed to network one PC including an adapter, software and documentation. Intel's AnyPoint Home Network-enabled computers are also now available from leading computer manufacturers. Ordering the Intel AnyPoint Home Network, or getting more information, is as easy as visiting U S WEST's Web site at http://www.uswest.com/home-network/ and clicking the link provided. Intel 2100 PRO/DSL Modems Make MegaBit Installation Even Easier US WEST and Intel started working together in November, 1999 to provide new MegaBit customers with Intel DSL modems. More than 50,000 customers in 13 states have added MegaBit Services since the start of the agreement. New MegaBit Services customers who select an internal modem now receive the Intel 2100 PRO/DSL modem when they sign up for the service. It is the first product to emerge from a licensing agreement between Cisco and Intel to develop, manufacture and market a line of PC-based Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line modems compatible with Cisco's central office DSL equipment, which U S WEST uses to deliver its MegaBit Services.
